OUR SPEECH THERAPY PROGRAMS

Contacting a Speech-Language Pathologist is recommended when a child is have difficulty with: speaking clearly or fluently, expressive communication, understanding language, interacting with others or struggling with school.

Left untreated, Speech-Language delays and disorders can affect your child’s ability to interact with others and his/her quality of life. A communication difficulty can limit your child’s educational and career potential and affect the child every day of his or her life. Our pediatric focused Speech-Language Pathologists provide speech therapy and language therapy to address a broad range of issues including difficulties with the following:

  • Unclear Speech                         

  • Articulation 

  • Phonology

  • Motor Speech 

  • Stuttering

 

Difficulties such as unclear speech and stuttering are fairly common among children and warrant early intervention.  In such cases parents are advised to contact a speech-language pathologist rather than expecting the issue will resolve on it's own.  A speech-language pathologist will start by conducting a speech evaluation to better understand the nature difficulty and develop an individualized treatment plan.​

Parent education and training is provided to ensure maximal support at home and to facilitate faster progress.

PRE-SCHOOL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

Some children who are late talkers, have a persisting language delay or language impairment that follows them year to year.  Such children develop language skills at a much slower rate and often continue to lag behind other children in language and academic performance over the long term.  A language impairment typically follows into adult hood and can impact on access to post-secondary education and opportunities for work.   

 

Nexus Therapy offers language therapy programs for pre-school and school age children to help provide them with the vocabulary, comprehension base and expressive language skills needed to follow instructions, understand the school curriculum and become more effective communicators.

SPEECH THERAPY FOR AUTISM

Difficulties with understanding language, following directions, expressive communication and social skills are quite common among children on the autism spectrum.  Nexus Therapy offers speech therapy services for children with autism to help in developing: functional communication skills, the ability to understand and follow directions and the ability to play appropriately and interact with family members and peers.  

 

Our school readiness programs help children on the spectrum acquire the precursory skills required for following directions, understanding language and functioning within the classroom setting.  Speech therapy services are for children with autism are paid for by the Autism Funding Unit.

Children who begin speaking late may continue to lag behind their peers in language and be at greater risk for academic and reading difficulties once they start school.  Challenges with reading are also fairly common among children with average language skills.  Difficulty with decoding and reading comprehension impacts on a child's ability understand the school curriculum as well as their performance on written tests and assignments.
