Nexus Therapy offers speech therapy at home or school for First Nation's children in greater Calgary through Jordan's Principle Funding.  Our licensed speech-language pathologists provide customized speech therapy programs for children in the comfort of home, daycare or school.  Our therapists come equipped with all the materials required to provide effective treatment.  Valuable parent training is provided to help accelerate your child's progress.  Our care coordinator is available to assist families who wish to apply for Jordan's Principle Funding.

 

Jordan's Principle funds health, social and education products, supports and services for First Nations children across Canada, including British Columbia.  It applies to all public services, including services that are beyond the normative standard of care to ensure substantive equality, culturally appropriate services and to safeguard the best interests of the child.  Jordan's Principle Funding provides payment for needed services by the government or department that first receives the request.

 

 

Jordan's Principle Funding is available to all First Nations children in Canada

The current eligibility criteria for funding under Jordan's Principle include:

• First Nations children registered under the Indian Act, living on or off reserve;
• First Nation children entitled to be registered under the Indian Act;
• First Nation children without Indian Act status or not eligible for Indian Act status who live off-reserve but are recognized as members by their Nation, who have urgent and/or life-threatening needs;1
• Any Indigenous child who is ordinarily resident on reserve.

In Alberta, all First Nations children 0-18 years with an identified need for a health or social service, product or support are eligible, including services beyond the normative standard of care, regardless of their health or social status, or place of residency (on- or off-reserve).

Speech Therapy at Your Home

 

Parent who contact us often have concerns that their child is either not talking enough or having trouble speaking clearly.  Nexus Therapy offers speech therapy programs for children in the comfort of their home.  We begin by conducting an initial assessment to better understand the nature of the difficulties that a child is having and then develop an individualized treatment plan. We provide speech therapy to address a variety of concerns including: unclear speech, insufficient vocabulary, language delay, weak comprehension, stuttering and language based learning difficulties.  Parent education and training is an important part of the services we offer to ensure that on-going support is being provided between therapy sessions and to help facilitate progress within a shorter time frame. Our at home speech therapy programs focus on developing core skills including: clear speech, language comprehension, expressive language, play and social interaction to help children become better listeners and communicators.

Articulation Therapy

 

Difficulties with unclear speech and not being understood properly can lead to frustration and impact on a child's confidence as a speaker. Nexus Therapy offers customized speech therapy programs for pre-school and school age children who are having difficulty with articulation speech apraxia, motor speech disorders and unclear speech.  Our speech-language pathologists will begin with a speech assessment and develop an individualized treatment plan to help improve your child's speech clarity and intelligibility.  Parent training and home work practice materials are provided to help accelerate your child's progress.  Call our care coordinator for further information or to schedule a comprehensive speech evaluation for your child at home.

TREATMENT FOR UNCLEAR SPEECH

A child may present with unclear speech for a variety of reasons.  By age 4 a child is expeted to be intelligible 90% of the time to an unfamiliar listener.  When a child has a speech difficulty, they are generally aware of it. Children who speak differently from other children know that they do, and this can significantly erode their confidence. Our speech-language pathologists provide speech therapy to address a variety of speech related difficulties including articulation and phonological delays, motor speech disorders as well as issues such as lisping and turning Rs into Ws.

Speech Therapy for Autism

 

Problems with language comprehension, insufficient vocabulary, social skills and expressive communication are common challenges for many child with autism spectrum disorder.

 

Nexus Speech Therapy offers speech therapy at home or daycare to help children with autism develop the language base they need for understanding and communicating, acquiring new skills and getting ready for school.  Our speech therapy programs focus on developing functional skills including:

  • telling a personal story

  • social interaction

  • inter-active play skills

AT HOME THERAPY FOR FOR AUTISM

Speech-language therapy support is import for helping children with asd develop the skills they need to understand language, learn, communicate and interact with others.  Our customized speech therapy programs are developed to help children develop functional comprehnsion and communication skills and better prepare them for school.  Speech therapy support at daycare is available to help children with following routines,   participating in group learning activiites such as circle time and learning how to play and interact with typically developing children.

Reading & Literacy

 

A significant number of children struggle with learning to read and write at grade level because they do not receive appropriate or adequate literacy support at school.  Nexus Speech Therapy offers evidence based reading programs to help children develop reading skills  including decoding and sight word recognition to improve reading fluency.  Our reading and literacy programs focus on learning to read, reading to learn and equipping children with the language base needed to better understand written text and become more effective communicators.  Nexus Therapy offers language and academic support for:
